Kind'uva long one and it's pretty all over the place, but I needed to say it.
Good day Comrades, I come with an observation. It has come to my attention that many Artists are discontent with how Deviant art operates and therefore effects them. Now what could they be discontent with you may ask, well they take issue with their popularity. Few will admit it as such but this is the simplified explanation. To expand on that, what I mean is that many Artists find themselves wanting more comments, more views, more interaction. I've seen it happen to many Artists as of recent. They feel undervalued and unappreciated. Many will point to a skill gap to explain this dilemma, But I see it differently.
Now then what could be causing the problem?
Well there are many reasons for why someone will receive less interaction than others. View-ability. It's very hard to get noticed on Deviant art. The main ways being; Groups, the front page, and searches. Now two of these ways are immediately made more difficult by the way Deviant Art is set up. Your work is only on the front page for a few seconds, literally in most cases. As for searches well the pre-set parameters search for the most popular pictures not newest a different setting that you can switch. Lastly groups, Groups are a great way to get noticed because they are set up to cater to a specific audience... usually, but some have odd user restrictions or don't like your idea of crossover, ect, ect. Quality is rarely an issue from what I've seen, it helps no doubt, but it's not the most important factor.
Another problem I see is people treating Deviant Art like a Social Media site with many leaving for Tumblr. While being sociable is a good thing I do not find it to be a primary concern for this site, but many others see it differently.
Now how can we fix these problems?
Well here's where it get's tricky. First you have to ask "what are you drawing and why should people view it?" The answer will never be "because I deserve a chance." I'm sorry but that's not how it works.
Here are a few way to improve your search visibility
1. lots of tags, if the only tags you find yourself adding are #Lonlin #soldier #floatyspaceyships then you are going to run into problems. You're going to want to beef up that tag line to include some nuance such as #gasmask #trenchcoat #gun #scifi #helmet even then it is much harder for original concepts to get noticed then an established fandom.
2. Make your description simple and understandable, short stories and bios are nice. Questions are good if you want to be direct with the audience.
3. Don't build yourself up for failure. If all you want is comments and conversations you're going to be disappointed. These are people with interests and motives just like you, if they don't want to comment they wont.
more to come.
Honestly this is a big problem and's much more than I can explain with any tact. So Here are a few videos from Ze Frank that help me when I need it.
For when you want to find people like you
For, well things
Emotions and comments. Probably the most important one!
I don't know what I wanted to accomplish with this but oh well.
Have a goodday/night Comrades. Best of luck to you all.
